Fairfield Warde boys' lacrosse could get used to this whole offensive outburst thing.
The Mustangs pounced early and often as they built a 13-4 fourth quarter lead, and held on to win 14-9 on Wednesday against Stamford at Tetreau-Davis Field.
"We expected a tough game from them," Warde head coach Tom Cunningham said. "We knew we had to come out here ready to play."
Junior standout Taylor Wicke scored five goals and Sam Eckerson tallied four of his own while Scott Hyman notched three of his own for the Mustangs.
"Scott Hyman had a terrific game today," Cunningham said. "I've expected it from him. He really picked it up today."
The Mustangs have scored 32 goals in the past two games, both wins. Warde pushed its record to 5-8, as close as the Mustangs have been to .500 since they were 1-4 on April 14.
"We worked hard throughout the whole game," Wicke said.
Stamford fell to 4-8, significantly damaging their chance at a playoff spot with FCIAC powers New Canaan and Darien coming up.
"This could've been a big game for us," Stamford head coach Jeremy White said. "We had an opportunity, if we had won this game to make states. To come out as flat as we did it's disappointing."
Warde got on the board early
Wicke tallied his third goal of the game at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter, it was the lone strike of the quarter, thanks mostly to Warde's pressuring defense, which forced the Black Knights into turnovers.
"We've put more pressure on the ball and forced more turnovers," Cunningham said.
Warde broke the game open in the third quarter, tallying six straight goals. Eckerson scored three, Hyman two, and Wicke notched his fifth of the game. John Abbey also tallied a goal and the third ended 12-4.
Wicke scored his fifth in the fourth quarter, and Andrew Kelly scored to cap Warde's scoring. The Black Knights scored five times, including a pair on Warde miscues to get to within five, but the Mustang lead would never get smaller than that.
"Maybe we got a little comfortable," Cunningham said. "There have been a few games where there have been some lapses, and I keep telling the guys '48 minutes, 48 minutes.
"We can't let teams back into the game."
Warde will try to boost its record and its chances at making the CIAC playoffs against Trinity Catholic tonight at Tetreau-Davis Field at 7 p.m.
